Developing With FileMaker Go

FileMaker Go has almost the same functionality as FileMaker Pro with some exceptions that are covered in the class. The first day covers the fundamentals of developing with FileMaker Go including layout design, and calculations & scripting for mobile devices. The second day covers advanced topics including barcode scanning, signature capture, charting, and URL scripting. Class size is kept small to ensure lots of personalized attention.

Using FileMaker Go - Examine the functionality offered to you through the menu commands, the differences between FileMaker Go and FileMaker Pro, and begin learning about the ways in which FileMaker Go deals with interruptions from incoming calls or hitting the Home button. Understanding these tools and behaviors will start you on your way to building solid and stable mobile applications.

Designing Mobile Layouts - Learn to use the layout tools to design layouts that meet the needs of a particular system by making efficient use of special layout objects such as tooltips, conditional formatting, portals, charts and more. This module covers best practices for formatting font and button size, supported and unsupported features, and general iOS functionality and how it can affect your FileMaker database.

Calculations & Mobile Scripting - FileMaker Go supports most FileMaker script steps and allows any script to be executed just as in FileMaker Pro with some additional considerations for the mobile platform. It is important to structure scripts in ways that keep performance in mind, but with FileMaker Go, it becomes critically important that they be structured in a way that can withstand interruptions and perform well over slow networks. Learn how to structure your scripts to recognize if they are being triggered from a FileMaker Go client, how to work around the inability to print from a mobile device, and be introduced to a method of scripting that can account for interruptions.

Advanced Mobile Scripting - When developing mobile applications, the user experience and application performance can be greatly affected by the complexity of scripted routines and other factors such as network availability and possible intermittent latency. You might consider strategies outside of FileMaker Go for managing complex routines that work with large data sets or require a lot of processing time because disruptions to user tasks and interrupted processes are less likely to occur. How these scripts are structured has always been important, but it becomes ever more so with FileMaker Go since a running script can be terminated at any time.

Integration Techniques - To deliver more complex workflows with FileMaker Go requires integration with the Web and other iOS applications. While on the move, you can leverage the iPhone and iPad capabilities to enhance the FileMaker Go experience. Learn how to perform advanced techniques including scanning barcodes, image handling, electronic signature capture, charting, inter-application scripting, and geo-location. Some of these techniques may require technologies/applications outside of FileMaker Go, which can lead to new and useful approaches for your FileMaker solution.
