At the Heart of Patient Care - Baylor College of Medicine
Ranked 4th in the nation for cardiology and heart surgery by U.S. News and World Report in 2011, the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital is the home to the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery (DCS) in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). At BCM, the focus is on excellence in patient care, education, and groundbreaking research that seek new discoveries to help cure disease and improve patient health. MightyData partnered specifically with DCS to develop a more streamlined solution to storing and tracking patient data used for its research, clinical literature, educational conferences and administrative reporting, ultimately improving the way BCM provides care to patients. Previously, the surgeons and their clinical and research teams used disparate and somewhat limited databases. DCS needed a new, comprehensive database system that was capable of efficiently processing and managing patient information from the past, in the present, and into the future.
Taking into account all the necessary variables involved with tracking all clinical preoperative, operative and outcome patient data, MightyData developed a FileMaker solution that is user friendly and secure, provides an internal audit component, and employs advanced interface techniques for greater data delivery. “MightyData has engineered a solution that will give us the tool to retrieve and report clinical data in a timely manner, with greater clarity and accuracy, and will allow us to become much more prolific in our scientific and professional reporting endeavors,” explains Matt Price, Senior Database Manager.
To date, more than 1500 patient records have been entered into the new database. Additional full-time staff has been hired to abstract prospectively and retrospectively-generated data into the database. “MightyData understood our specific needs and was not afraid to ask questions to help them understand the often difficult medical language associated with aortic surgery. The FileMaker solution will improve the data needs within DCS with the ultimate goal of improving the care we provide to our patients, which is at the heart of what we do,” says Matt Price. We couldn’t agree more.
